I came into this world at a time
when it was expected that a person would spend his entire
life working for the same employer. A lot of things
have changed since then. The influences of the intervening
decades have changed the workplace and the expectations
of both employers and employees.
After I graduated from Ithaca College,
my family and friends expected that I would remain in
Poughkeepsie, NY and work at IBM or the Post Office,
just like many of them had done before me. I had other
ideas. I went to New York City and got a job with New
York Telephone as a Service Representative. I was excited
to be starting a new life in the city and was looking
forward to getting a paycheck after many years of college.
I was promoted after a couple of
years and really enjoyed my job. Then came the break-up
of the Bell System and life was never the same. I was
moved over to AT&T where I moved from NY to California
and back to NY again. Finally, in 1998, AT&T made an
early retirement offer that I could not refuse.
After 19 years, I found myself with
no job and decided it was time that I took charge
of my own future. After decades of going where I was
needed for my employer, now I went where I wanted.
I returned to the Bay Area.
